The most common equipment used in TMJ/TMD treatment and diagnosis are:

• TENS machine. This machine has small pads that are positioned on your face. Gentle electrical impulses are administered through the pads. The impulses act like a massage, encouraging the muscles to relax. The TENS machine greatly reduces TMJ/TMD pain and discomfort and gives a clues to more permanent corrections.

• K-7 unit. This machine tracks and records the movement of your jaw so your dentist can determine a more precise cause and appropriate correction of your TMD symptoms. The K7 tracks movement when you chew, speak, open and close your jaw, and swallow.

• Electromyography. This device measures the electrical activity in your muscles. This information will provide your dentist with insight into how your muscles are behaving while at rest and in motion. Much of the process behind jaw function is unseen. Chewing, speaking and yawning are all normal daily routines, but the science behind our jaw movement is truly extraordinary. Neuromuscular dentistry provides diagnosis and treatment for problems arising in this intricate part of our anatomy.

The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is a delicate, complex joint connecting the jaw to the skull. This hinged joint makes it possible for you to open and close your jaw and move your jaw from side to side. A disc composed of firm, flexible cartilage is positioned in between the bones that form the joint. The TMJ is surrounded by a network of muscles and nerves.

One of the most common symptoms of temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ/TMD) is persistent and intense headaches. These headaches can be very painful but generally are not the same as migraines. Both headaches can tend to feel the same, but the causes are different.

The causes of TMJ headaches include:

• Improper bite
• Jaw clenching
• Teeth grinding
• Injury to the TMJ

All of these things cause excessive and unhealthy forces to be exerted on the TMJ structures. These forces exerted on the TMJ strain the muscles and nerves surrounding the joint, resulting in tension that leads to pain and headaches. Although TMJ/TMD is a recurring condition that can be permanently treated with neuromuscular dentistry, patients have begun reporting success alleviating their symptoms through the use of TMJ exercises that stretch and relax the jaw muscles. If you search the internet you may find a variety of suggested exercises to help alleviate your TMD symptoms.

At this point, no at-home exercises are officially endorsed as relieving pain caused by TMD, however, you may find that these exercises temporarily relieve your TMJ pain. CAD/CAM is only one technology we use to provide you with the best dental care possible. The use of computer-aided design and manufacturing allows us to make a porcelain restoration in a matter of minutes that will fit your tooth more perfectly than any restoration made by hand could do.

The use of immediate restorations prevents one of the biggest problems caused by having to wait two or more weeks for a dental restoration: shifting teeth. Other dentists use DMD, which stands for Dentariae Medicinae Doctor, or doctor of dental medicine. What is the difference between these two degrees? Is one of them better than the other?

Main Differences between DDS and DMD

The main difference between a DDS and a DMD degree is the school at which it was awarded. While the DDS and DMD curricula are basically the same, DMD is more commonly used at Ivy League schools. Malocclusion is the term dentists use to describe an overbite or underbite. An overbite is a common orthodontic condition in which the upper teeth over lap or fall over the lower arch of teeth. What is a Crossbite?

A Crossbite is an irregularity of how your teeth fit together. A crossbite can involve just one tooth or a group of teeth. Teaching Kids to Practice Good Oral Hygiene Daily

One of the best ways to be sure your child will have healthy teeth and gums into adulthood is to teach them to practice good oral hygiene.

You can start getting your child accustomed to having his or her teeth cleaned in infancy by gently cleaning their gums after they nurse or are given a bottle. Once their teeth start to come in, brush them gently with an infant toothbrush. While we all wish to have bright, white teeth, many factors can cause discoloration or staining. Many of these factors can be eliminated or prevented, and most can be treated with tooth whitening procedures.

The most common, and most treatable, causes of stained tooth enamel are dietary. Various foods and beverages can stain the teeth, including coffee, tea, and other strongly-colored foods. Tobacco also causes stains. Because these substances stain the outside surface of the teeth, this is referred to as extrinsic staining. Extrinsic staining can be eliminated with tooth whitening treatments.

Intrinsic staining discolors the deeper layers of the tooth, and is often resistant to tooth whitening treatment. Intrinsic staining can be caused by:

CEREC vs. Traditional Crowns & Veneers

An innovative new technology, CEREC, or Chairside Economical Restorations Esthetic Ceramic, allows you to have a restoration molded and placed in a single visit.

Traditionally, restorations such as crowns and veneers are placed in a two-part process. On the first visit, your teeth are prepared for the restoration and the dentist takes a mold. A temporary restoration is then placed, and the mold goes to a lab where your final, custom-made restoration is crafted. When it returns from the lab, it's permanently affixed during a second visit.

CEREC Procedure

With CEREC, much less tooth needs to be removed and everything happens in a single visit. Rather than using the usual gel-like substance to take a mold of your teeth, a special powder is applied to the teeth, and Dr. LeSueur or Dr. Dodaro takes detailed digital pictures. These pictures are converted into a 3D computer model. This CEREC computer then directs a computer milling machine to mill the restoration from a block of porcelain, which Dr. LeSueur or Dr. Dodaro can then place immediately on your teeth.

The small ceramic blocks used by CEREC technology are color-matched and formulated to mimic your natural enamel so your restorations look and feel very much like your natural teeth. The Ease Of Mini Implant Use

I recently attended my yearly update training course on mini implants with Dr. Gordon Christiansen. This is a wonderful option for those with loose or ill-fitting dentures or partial dentures and can even be used to replace individual teeth in many cases where larger conventional implants won't work. There are now several brands of mini implants approved by the FDA for permanent implant use varying in size, shape, and length allowing more versatility in placement. These mini implants can usually be placed and used immediately rather then requiring the several month waiting period of most larger conventional implants. They can also last just as long as the larger implants, which is potentially for life. They are very simple to place with local anesthetic and our patients report no pain at the time of placement and little or no pain afterward. We have quite a number of patients that reported a "life changing" improvement to their ability to eat and enjoy food again once we placed their mini implants.

A Night To Remember

Last night my wife and I attended our daughter Kari Sue's High School graduation. It rained during the entire ceremony. We were all soaked because it was outside!!! We’ve seen many unnecessary cases of gum disease in our practice. Gum disease is preventable with good dental hygiene, but once you get it, it’s difficult to stop. Tooth and bone loss can result from untreated gum disease, and unsightly swollen, red gums are also its hallmark.
Steps to avoiding gum disease include the following:
• Brush regularly
It goes without saying that regular tooth brushing is essential. But do you brush long enough? Two minutes of gentle brushing with a soft brush is the minimum. Don’t brush too firmly—this can damage your gums and even cause bleeding.
• Floss consistently
You just can’t skip flossing since your brush can’t access those hard-to-reach places. You’ll be a prime candidate for gum disease if you skip this critical step.
• Use dye tablets
Give dye tablets a try to monitor how well you’re brushing; the stains they leave will help you locate the areas you’re missing when you brush.
• Drink lots of water
Dry mouths are a haven for bacteria growth. Hydrate frequently to reduce plaque accumulation.
• Eat healthfully
A balanced diet helps preserve your teeth and gums. Include lots of folic acid, Vitamin C, and zinc to arm your immune system to fend off tooth decay.

A dental bond is a pliable material that can be shaped and fitted to correct dental problems. The material is matched to the patient’s exact tooth color to create a completely natural-looking appearance.

Dental bonds are used to correct the following dental woes:

Chipped Teeth – Chipped teeth appear crooked. They promote decay and discoloration. The bonding process can repair up to one-half of a chipped tooth.
