This machine has small pads that are positioned on your face. Gentle electrical impulses are administered through the pads. The impulses act like a massage, encouraging the muscles to relax. The TENS machine greatly reduces TMJ/TMD pain and discomfort and gives a clues to more permanent corrections.

• K-7 unit. This machine tracks and records the movement of your jaw so your dentist can determine a more precise cause and appropriate correction of your TMD symptoms. The K7 tracks movement when you chew, speak, open and close your jaw, and swallow.

• Electromyography. This device measures the electrical activity in your muscles. This information will provide your dentist with insight into how your muscles are behaving while at rest and in motion. Most TMJ pains are of muscular origin and diagnosing and correcting improper activity levels allows resolution of many TMJ pains.

• Sonography. This devise notes noises caused by TMJ malfunction that gives your dentist clues about causes and timing of problems in TMJ function.

• Splint. This is a devise constructed to fit the teeth of a TMJ dysfunction patient and allow repositioning of the bite to bring relieve and help diagnose final and correct position for joint and muscle health.

Based on your dentist’s findings from TMJ/TMD testing, treatment will consist of alleviating your symptoms while also treating the cause. Oftentimes, these symptoms are experienced as a result of a misaligned bite. When your teeth and jaws come together incorrectly, muscles become tense and painful thus adversely affecting TMJ function.

If you are experiencing TMJ symptoms in Phoenix or the surrounding areas, please contact the experienced Arizona dentists Dr. Scott LeSueur and Dr. Charles Dodaro to schedule a consultation.

The Science Behind the Bite

Much of the process behind jaw function is unseen. Chewing, speaking and yawning are all normal daily routines, but the science behind our jaw movement is truly extraordinary. Neuromuscular dentistry provides diagnosis and treatment for problems arising in this intricate part of our anatomy.

The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is a delicate, complex joint connecting the jaw to the skull. This hinged joint makes it possible for you to open and close your jaw and move your jaw from side to side. A disc composed of firm, flexible cartilage is positioned in between the bones that form the joint. The TMJ is surrounded by a network of muscles and nerves.

Because of the intricate movements and anatomic connections of muscles and nerves of the TMJ structure, many people experience tenderness, pain, abnormal function or other TMJ symptoms. These conditions are referred to as TMJ disorders, or “TMD.” The symptoms of TMD often arise as a result of:

• A misaligned bite
• Disc erosion
• Disc misalignment
• Damaged cartilage
• Joint damage from injury
• Muscle fatigue from excessive and abnormal muscle use
The disorders associated with the TMJ range in severity. Many of the disorders are treated with dental approaches that focus on bite alignment and prevention of TMJ stress.

To learn more about TMJ and the associated disorders in Phoenix, please contact the experienced Arizona dentists Dr. Scott LeSueur and Dr. Charles Dodaro to schedule a consultation.

TMJ/TMD Aches vs. Migraines

One of the most common symptoms of temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ/TMD) is persistent and intense headaches. These headaches can be very painful but generally are not the same as migraines. Both headaches can tend to feel the same, but the causes are different.

The causes of TMJ headaches include:

• Improper bite
• Jaw clenching
• Teeth grinding
• Injury to the TMJ

All of these things cause excessive and unhealthy forces to be exerted on the TMJ structures. These forces exerted on the TMJ strain the muscles and nerves surrounding the joint, resulting in tension that leads to pain and headaches. TMJ headaches many times lead to pain spreading to the neck and shoulders.

Not a lot is known about the causes of migraines. Migraines do have certain well-documented triggers, such as bright lights, loud noises, and various smells and foods.

When you seek help for migraine-like headaches, doctors who do not have a background in dentistry will most often treat the headaches as migraines. Migraines are treated with medications, as well as dietary and lifestyle changes. If your headaches are actually caused by TMJ, migraine treatments will not address the cause of your headaches or prevent them, only temporarily relieve the pain. Instead, you may require TMJ treatments.

For TMJ treatment in Phoenix, Arizona and the surrounding east valley areas, please contact the experienced neuromuscular dentists Dr. Scott LeSueur and Dr. Charles Dodaro to schedule a consultation.

Do I Need a Crown?

A dental crown is a powerful restoration that can also improve the appearance of your tooth, while protecting and strengthening it. A dental crown may not normally be considered a cosmetic restoration because most of the time you get a crown to strengthen a tooth. Here are some of the more common reasons why people need dental crowns:

• Cracked teeth
• Failed large fillings
• Root canals
• Worn down teeth

In general, a dental crown is used when the damage to your tooth is too extensive or otherwise not suitable to using a tooth-colored filling or porcelain fillings. If the structural integrity of your tooth is compromised in a way that makes it susceptible to further damage due to the force of chewing, or if the location of a cavity makes it difficult or impossible to fill, or if you need to strengthen a tooth after a root canal, then a dental crown is recommended.

The good news is that the crowned or capped tooth can look extremely lifelike and improve the appearance of your smile dramatically..

To learn more about dental crowns, please call or email Scott LeSueur & Charles Dodaro Cosmetic Dentistry today.

Dental Implants and Porcelain Veneers

If you are looking for a dental solution that is right for you, porcelain veneers and dental implants are two of the most powerful cosmetic dentistry treatments available. However, they are radically different, and each one is appropriate only to the specific treatments that they are designed to correct.

Porcelain veneers are an extremely versatile treatment that can be used to treat:

• Chipped teeth
• Cracked teeth
• Crooked or gapped teeth
• Short teeth or gummy smile
• Misshaped teeth
• Discolored teeth

For each of these cosmetic dental problems, porcelain veneers give a long-lasting, attractive solution.

Dental implants, on the other hand, only treat one problem, but they do it very well. Dental implants are frequently the best replacement for missing teeth. Whether you are missing one tooth or several, dental implants may be the ideal solution for you. Dental implants can be the ideal treatment for a missing tooth for many people because they are anchored into your jaw and therefore are able to function and look just like your natural teeth.

To learn which dental treatment is right for you, please contact Scott LeSueur & Charles Dodaro Cosmetic Dentistry today.

Am I Too Old for Braces?

Many adults understandably hesitate when faced with the need for braces late in life. Traditional braces have long been associated with adolescents and children, and the daily inconveniences posed by brackets and wires can be especially difficult for an adult patient to manage.

The good news is that advances in modern dentistry have led to alternative options for braces treatment. One of the most popular new options is Invisalign®, which uses a set of clear, custom-made teeth aligners to slowly guide your teeth into their ideal position. Unlike braces, which are bonded to your teeth, the clear plastic trays used during Invisalign® treatment can be removed any time you need to eat, drink, or brush your teeth. Best of all, they are virtually invisible while you’re wearing them.

Invisalign® can address a number of orthodontic problems, including:
• Crooked teeth
• Underbite and overbite
• Gaps between teeth
• Minor teeth crowding

Straightening your teeth is more important than you think. A proper bite will protect your teeth from premature damage, and help prevent decay caused by food trapped between gaps in your teeth. Correcting your bite also prevents complications associated with TMJ/TMD , a jaw disorder caused by misalignment.

No matter how old you are, you can always benefit from teeth straightening. If this joint is even slightly displaced, so are the connected tissues, causing swelling and inflammation that interfere with the natural movement of your jaw.

Neuromuscular dentists are specially-trained in the diagnosis and treatment of TMD. In order to determine whether or not you have TMD, our dentists will use a device called the TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Neural Stimulation) unit. This device relaxes your jaw muscles through a series of electrical impulses, allowing Dr. LeSueur and Dr. Dodaro to determine the ideal position of your jaw. The TENS unit can also help you feel immediate relief from your TMD symptoms as it flushes out toxins, increases your blood flow, and stimulates your body’s production of natural pain-killers called endorphins.

Once you have been diagnosed with TMD, Dr. LeSueur and Dr. Dodaro will develop a personalized treatment plan to help return your bite to its correct alignment. This may involve simple exercises and lifestyle changes, or it may require the use of a temporary orthotic appliance that gradually shifts the position of your jaw.

Whatever your needs, our advanced neuromuscular dentistry team can help you obtain lasting, permanent relief from jaw pain and stiffness. If you live in Mesa, Scottsdale, Phoenix, Tempe, or another East Valley City in Arizona, please contact our experienced neuromuscular dentists Dr. LeSueur and Dr. Dodaro today to schedule a consultation.

Haven't Been to the Dentist in Years?

With all the problems in our national and local economies, many patients have chosen to forgo dental treatment for a while due to lost insurance, lost jobs, cutbacks in wages or other financial challenges they are facing. It's been very tough for many.

Phoenix dentists Dr. Scott LeSueur and Dr. Charles Dodaro spend alot of time helping patients prioritize their dental care so they can get the most important things done while waiting on the others. This is called phasing care, and it helps prevent problems from getting out of control due to long periods without any dental care.

We are very happy to help anyone who wants to find out what their options are on a limited budget. We do not stand in judgment over anyone who comes back to start the road to dental health after a long hiatus. The most important thing is to do something by developing a plan and that is what we focus on. The cup is "really half full and not half empty".

We hope that no one will be afraid to contact us and let us help them to find solutions to their dental needs. There are many different causes of migraine headaches. Stress and incorrect Bite relationships can cause or contribute to migraine and other facial pains Stress takes a toll on your body in many ways, and two of the most common physical reactions to stress are clenching the jaws and grinding teeth. If you do these two things, you are putting strain on your facial muscles causing them to become fatigued and this, in turn, can lead to facial pain and migraine headaches.

Your Temporomandibular Joints (TMJ) allow you to move your lower jaw side to side, up and down, and back and forth. Stress and poor bite relationships can severely affect the functionality of your TMJ and can even limit how wide you can open your mouth. Other TMJ symptoms that can be caused by stress and poor bite relationships include:

• Popping and clicking of the jaw
• Face, neck, and shoulder pain
• Migraine and tension headaches
• Limited jaw movement
• Ringing in the ears and ear pain

Treating Stress to Relieve TMJ Symptoms

There are many TMJ Dysfunction symptoms and their causes that can be treated with the help of Phoenix neuromuscular dentists Dr. Scott LeSueur and Dr. Charles Dodaro. The simple truth, in this case, is that there is no simple truth. Just as you are different from any other person, so also your personal dental alignment may call for a different technique than anyone else’s.

Some dentists and orthodontists swear by traditional braces and refuse to use any other type of dental aligners. However, even modern braces are an evolution of an older type of orthodontia. If you search the internet you may find a variety of suggested exercises to help alleviate your TMD symptoms.

At this point, no at-home exercises are officially endorsed as relieving pain caused by TMD, however, you may find that these exercises temporarily relieve your TMJ pain. Many neuromuscular dentists are encouraging patients to perform TMJ exercises, if they help alleviate discomfort, and, our dentists are no different.

However, you should take these exercises slowly and be careful not to injure your jaw by performing them incorrectly. Also, keep in mind that the only known permanent treatment for TMD is realigning the jaw to its ideal position, which can only be done by a neuromuscular dentist.

You can find out if your symptoms are caused by TMJ/TMD through an examination with one of our neuromuscular dentists. Tooth decay and periodontal disease with tooth loss affect young individuals as well as the old, and patients who neglect their oral health find themselves prematurely in need of false teeth.

Fortunately, your options for tooth replacement are not what they were a century ago, not even if you have lost all of your upper or lower teeth. Today, dental implants allow you all the functionality of your natural teeth without the slipping or poor fit that is often associated with removable dentures.

Dental implants consist of a titanium metal post which is implanted directly into your jaw bone like the root of your natural tooth, and which then supports a false tooth. Multiple dental implants can be used to support a dental bridge or even fix dentures in place for greater confidence and significantly improve chewing.

The question of dental implants versus dentures is much debated, but the first step is finding out if you are a good candidate for dental implants. To find out if dental implants may be the right option for you, please contact implant dentists Dr. LeSueur and Dr. Dodaro today, welcoming patients from Phoenix and the surrounding areas of Scottsdale, Mesa, and Tempe, Arizona.

Periodontal Issues in Children

You have probably heard other parents tell their children that sugar will “rot your teeth,” and you may have even told your own children this. But did you know that the same bad habits that promote tooth decay can attack your child’s gums and create serious periodontal issues?

Gum disease is an issue we as adults are often made aware of, but many parents are under the misconception that children are not at risk for gum disease and gingivitis. The truth is that gum disease is the second most common oral health issue children deal with, right behind cavities. But while a cavity affects only the tooth that hosts it, gum disease can not only weaken your child’s teeth but expose him or her to other dangerous systemic ailments.

Periodontal issues in children are often an overlooked topic, but Dr. LeSueur and Dr. Dodaro know that your child’s whole mouth health is important, not just his or her tooth health. To learn more, please read about how to prevent gum disease.

If you believe your child may be suffering from periodontal issues, please contact pediatric dentists Dr. LeSueur and Dr. Dodaro today, serving patients from Phoenix, Mesa, Tempe, and Scottsdale, Arizona.

Periodontal Abscess

Gum disease is one of the most damaging problems your teeth can face, often leading to serious and painful conditions, like periodontal abscess, or a pocket between your gums and tooth that harbors bacteria and infection. While we may seem to talk a lot about dental technology, we are investing in our office to be able to provide you with the best dental treatment available.

CAD/CAM is only one technology we use to provide you with the best dental care possible. The use of computer-aided design and manufacturing allows us to make a porcelain restoration in a matter of minutes that will fit your tooth more perfectly than any restoration made by hand could do.

The use of immediate restorations prevents one of the biggest problems caused by having to wait two or more weeks for a dental restoration: shifting teeth. As soon as you lose a tooth or a portion of a tooth, your teeth may begin to shift and move into the new space provided. This is a good reason to have damaged teeth repaired as soon as you notice the damage.

There are also numerous sensitivity issues caused by having to use a temporary restoration while waiting two or three weeks for a traditional lab made crown to be ready to cement. CERAC CAD/CAM restorations are commentated and sealed the same day the tooth is prepared thus reducing trauma to the tooth by minimizing exposure of the prepared tooth to the oral fluids and foods.

If you have a broken or damaged tooth, don’t hesitate to have it repaired. Please contact cosmetic dentists Dr. LeSueur and Dr. Dodaro today to schedule your appointment, serving patients in Phoenix and from the surrounding areas of Tempe, Mesa, and Scottsdale, Arizona.

Questions about CEREC

Why do we use CEREC?

One of the biggest reasons we use CEREC technology to create porcelain dental restorations is because it allows us to provide our patients with same day porcelain crowns and inlays and onlays. Porcelain is more natural than amalgam fillings and crowns, and does not need the support of a metal amalgam base. While it is true that the speed of CEREC makes getting dental restorations a fast option for you, it also allows our cosmetic dentists to uphold our values by providing you with quality, metal-free dental work, while still meeting your goals and exceeding your expectations.

Is CEREC as reliable as a dental laboratory?

CEREC is every bit as reliable as a dental lab for creating natural-looking porcelain crowns and dental restorations. In fact, CEREC allows our cosmetic dentists as much control over the creation of your dental restoration as a lab would provide, but with much greater efficiency. The detail of CEREC-sculpted restorations often makes them more reliable than restorations created by hand.

You can find out the answers to more of your questions about CEREC by contacting cosmetic dentists Dr. LeSueur and Dr. Dodaro today, serving patients from Phoenix and the surrounding areas of Mesa, Tempe, and Scottsdale, Arizona.

What Problems can Porcelain Veneers Fix?

Porcelain veneers are a versatile cosmetic dentistry treatment that can be used to correct a wide number of issues and defects in your teeth. These wafer-thin, custom-made shells bond strongly to your teeth and can correct:

Surface cracking

Chipped teeth

Small gaps between the teeth

Severe discoloration

Slightly crooked teeth

What Porcelain Veneers can Do

Porcelain veneers are non-invasive, relatively easy to affix and much less expensive than many other alternatives, so they’ve become a popular choice for correcting minor alignment problems and other issues. They are carefully color-matched and are made to fit precisely on your teeth. Constructed based on digital photos and modeling, they can be structured to fill in gaps between the teeth and even give the appearance of better alignment without the cost or discomfort of traditional orthodontics.

An extensive and detailed consultation with Dr. LeSueur or Dr. Dodaro can give you a good idea of what you can expect from veneers. Other dentists use DMD, which stands for Dentariae Medicinae Doctor, or doctor of dental medicine. What is the difference between these two degrees? Is one of them better than the other?

Main Differences between DDS and DMD

The main difference between a DDS and a DMD degree is the school at which it was awarded. While the DDS and DMD curricula are basically the same, DMD is more commonly used at Ivy League schools. This tradition dates back to 1867, when Harvard University added a dental school. Because Harvard names their degrees in Latin, Doctor of Dental Surgery was set aside for Dentariae Medicinae Doctor, a variation of the MD degree used for doctors of medicine.

Regardless of the name given their degree, both types of dentists are thoroughly trained to help you maintain high-quality dental health. In addition, some dentists, like Dr. LeSueur and Dr. Dodaro, also specialize in cosmetic dentistry procedures. If you’re pursuing a cosmetic dentistry procedure, be sure to look into the dentist’s background to be sure they have experience in cosmetic dentistry.

Scott LeSueur, DDS, and Charles Dodaro, DDS, have extensive experience in both general and cosmetic dentistry. On the shelves of any grocery store or drug store, you can find numerous at-home treatments to whiten your teeth, from whitening toothpastes to gel treatments applied with plastic trays. Many people choose to use this approach to whiten their teeth, assuming that the results they get will be just as effective, and less expensive, than the results they could get by visiting their dentist.

However, recent studies have shown that, while over-the-counter tooth whitening products are effective, their results are short-term. In addition, using these products often irritates the gums and causes your teeth to become overly sensitive. These side effects go away when you stop using the product, but so does the whitening benefit.

The best way to approach tooth whitening is to consult with your dentist. Not only can he provide much more powerful and effective tooth whitening methods, he can also be sure the methods are the best approach for your particular needs.

Dr. LeSueur and Dr. Dodaro use both in-office and take-home tooth whitening systems that can dramatically improve the look of your smile. To find out what tooth whitening system will give you the best results, please contact Phoenix, Scottsdale, and Mesa, Arizona area cosmetic dentistist Dr. Scott LeSueur and Dr. Charles Dodaro.

Why Do Teeth Darken?

Many factors can contribute to the darkening of the surfaces of the teeth. Some of these are controllable, while others are not. Some major contributing factors to discoloration include:

Strongly colored foods and beverages such as coffee, tea, and certain fruits and vegetables

Cracking and other surface damage to the enamel

Everyday wear and tear

Smoking

Use of certain medications or fluoride during the formation of the permanent teeth
Routine cleanings and diligent oral hygiene can help reduce staining caused by food and beverages, but severe staining of any kind might require more drastic measures.

For many kinds of discoloration and darkening of the teeth, tooth whitening procedures can make a dramatic difference. In-office tooth whitening, like the Zoom! tooth whitening procedure, can be performed in the dentist’s office in an hour or so. This procedure can lighten your teeth several shades in a single session.

If in-office tooth whitening or professional strength at-home treatments aren't sufficient to correct the discoloration of your teeth, or if the staining is embedded in the deeper layers of the tooth, porcelain veneers might be necessary. These paper-thin shells are carefully color-matched and give your teeth a new, natural, stain-free look.

If your teeth are discolored due to food staining or other issues, please contact Phoenix, Mesa, and Scottsdale, Arizona cosmetic dentists Dr. Scott LeSueur and Dr. Charles Dodaro for more information about how to correct this condition.

Improving Your Smile can Help Your Career

If you avoid smiling because you're self-conscious about defects in your teeth, it could be holding you back in several aspects of your life, including your career. Various studies have shown that people have a greater level of confidence and smile significantly more, when they have well-maintained teeth. The studies also strongly indicate that your smile can make or break your career advancement, or even influence whether you're hired in the first place.

Fortunately, modern cosmetic dentistry offers many relatively simple ways to spruce up your smile and give you that competitive edge you need in today's job market. A smile makeover can:

Correct gaps between the teeth

Make teeth appear straighter

Whiten discolored teeth

Repair cracks, chips or cavities

Improve the contour of your gums

Depending on your specific issues, one or more cosmetic dentistry procedures can make a dramatic difference in your smile. A combination might just give you the perfect smile that will restore the confidence you need.

To find out how cosmetic dentistry can help you achieve a look you'll feel good about, please contact Scott LeSueur, DDS and Charles Dodaro, DDS at their Phoenix, Mesa and Scottsdale, Arizona area cosmetic dentistry offices.

This blog has moved
This blog is now located at http://drofsmiles.blogspot.com/.
You will be automatically redirected in 30 seconds, or you may click here.

For feed subscribers, please update your feed subscriptions to
http://drofsmiles.blogspot.com/feeds/posts/default.

Porcelain Veneers Can Straighten Your Smile

High-quality, custom-made porcelain veneers can produce changes in your smile beyond what you might initially expect. Aside from covering severe discoloration, cracks, chips, or other defects in the teeth, they can also fill in gaps between the teeth or give teeth the appearance of being straighter and more perfectly aligned.

If you have small gaps between your teeth, porcelain veneers can be constructed so that they fill in these gaps and still give you a natural look. Veneers can also make slightly crooked teeth appear straighter by changing the tooth's profile. Using porcelain veneers in this way is often referred to as "instant orthodontics."

If the misalignments in your smile are minor, this treatment can make your teeth look straight and gapless without having to resort to long-term, expensive, and painful braces. Instead of taking months to achieve results, veneers can be applied in as little as two visits. A consultation with Dr. LeSueur and Dr. Dodaro can tell you if veneers will be sufficient to give you the perfect smile you’ve always wanted.

For answers to any questions you might have about porcelain veneers, please contact Phoenix, Mesa and Scottsdale, Arizona area cosmetic dentists Dr. Scott LeSueur and Dr. Charles Dodaro. Heart disease, diabetes, kidney disease, preterm labor, osteoporosis, Alzheimer"s disease, and even some types of cancers have all been linked in many new studies to oral health conditions. The International Journal Of Cardiology and the New England Journal of Medicine have both recently contained articles connecting oral health to vascular and heart health. The lining of the blood vessels seems to be very definitely affected the severity of the gum disease and if that gum disease is improved so does the lining of the blood vessels. The connection seems to be through the toxins released by the bacteria in the oral plaques and tartar that cause the red swollen gums that many people have. Gum disease occurs at many different levels from the gingivitis of red swollen gums all the way to periodontal disease which causes deep defects under the gums and bone and tooth loss. We hope everyone will get regular cleanings and checkups to catch and treat gum disease before more severe health problems develop. Please call for an appointment to check and treat your teeth and gums.

How To Afford To Get Great Dental Care

With the challenging economic times, many people are delaying dental care until they can afford it. The danger, of course, is that their dental health will worsen and infections with associated pain, swelling, and other systemic health complications can develop. The connections between teeth and gum problems and diabetes, heart, vascular, kidney and a variety of other serious health problems has been firmly established. Regular dental checkups and cleanings can help identify developing dental problems early and resolve them before costs skyrocket and health deteriorates. With the great variety of dental insurances we accept, the multitude of third party financing, and the possibility of phasing dental work over time according to priority, almost all dental problems can be resolved safely and comfortably while maintaining good cosmetics. Arthritis can make it difficult to brush and floss thoroughly. Normal wear and tear on the teeth can cause various problems like discoloration, cracking, chipping, or severe decay. New medications necessary because of changes in health can affect your gums, teeth, and saliva. And when you do visit the dentist for various types of dental work, your daily regimen of medication has probably become more complex. Your dentist must carefully consider your required prescriptions to prevent dangerous interaction with medications he might prescribe to improve your dental health. Natural changes in body function and medications for a healthy lifestyle mean dental therapies also must be modified to meet the varying needs of seniors.

It's important to work with a dentist who understands the special needs of older people. Going to your dentist regularly and being sure your dentist is aware of your medication usage, overall health information, and various other aspects of your individual situation can help ensure you get the best possible dental care. If you’re having difficulty with your oral hygiene due to arthritis or loss of dexterity or medications are reducing saliva flow or causing other health problems, a dentist with experience in this area can help. Alternative oral hygiene devices and treatments can help your teeth and gums remain healthy, comfortable and for last a lifetime.

For more information about dentistry issues specific to senior citizens, please contact Phoenix, Mesa and Scottsdale, Arizona dentists Dr. Scott LeSueur and Dr. Charles Dodaro to make an appointment or schedule a consultation.

Periodontal Disease

Crowded, crooked teeth are just unsightly and the best reason for braces, right? Not so fast – there are other reasons to correct that snaggly smile that have nothing to do with vanity.

A crowded smile can make it very difficult to keep your teeth as clean as you would like to. The jam-packed nature of crowded teeth creates areas for plaque to accumulate and turn into tartar. Dentists call tartar "calculus", a rock hard substance that results when our teeth aren't cleaned well. This material is a precursor to periodontal disease.

The long term consequences of periodontal disease are well documented. Not only does it cause tooth loss but numerous studies have described its relationship to heart disease, diabetes, low birth weight babies, obstructive sleep apnea and more.

So orthodontics isn't just about making your teeth nice, straight and beautiful. It is much, much more. It is just as important to align your teeth so that you are able to keep them clean and free of the bacterial toxins that cause the destruction that accompanies periodontal disease.

If you suffer from overlapping or crowded teeth you may able to avoid periodontal disease and metal braces by straightening your smile with Invisalign. The Invisalign system uses clear, plastic trays that fit over your teeth and allow your teeth to move gradually. Unlike traditional braces Invisalign is removable for eating and cleaning your teeth.

If you should have any questions regarding periodontal disease and orthodontics, please do not hesitate to give our office a call at 800-509-8357 to schedule your initial general health dentistry consultation. An overbite is a common orthodontic condition in which the upper teeth over lap or fall over the lower arch of teeth. An under bite occurs when the upper teeth fit inside the arch of the lower teeth. While an overbite may be unsightly, it will probably not cause any major health concerns but left untreated, an underbite may eventually lead to temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD) which affects the jaw joint, resulting in pain while opening the mouth, headaches and a wide range of other symptoms.

These types of bite disorders can be repaired by your dentist using orthodontics. Orthodontics is a specialty of dentistry that treats improper bites, crowding of the teeth and tooth irregularity. Options for correcting malocclusion are braces, dental appliances, or Invisalign.

Invisalign is a series of clear, removable aligners that are used as an alternative to traditional metal braces. These series of clear aligners slowly move the teeth into the proper place. You begin with taking some dental impressions that are used to make your aligners. Your dentist gradually takes you through these aligners and over time you will start to see you teeth move into the proper position. Correcting these types of bites with Invisalign is a terrific alternative to old metal braces. With advances in Invisalign technology over the past several years treatment for more severe cases of malocclusion is now possible.

If you have any questions regarding overbite or underbite or how the Invisalign system can help you achieve a healthy, beautiful smile by emailing our cosmetic dentistry office today to schedule your initial Invisalign consultation. A crossbite can involve just one tooth or a group of teeth. If the teeth don’t fit together properly, you may have some dental concerns later on in life. Crossbites can be very damaging to the teeth and surrounding structures. They cause excessive wear of the teeth, lead to jaw joint discomfort (TMD) and cause periodontal problems because the overlapping and crowding do not allow proper cleaning.

Crossbite can appear in various forms:

A posterior crossbite is where the lower teeth are outside the upper teeth in the back of the mouth

An anterior crossbite is where an upper front tooth is on the inside of the lower teeth

It is best to repair a Crossbite as early as possible but it is never too late. The first step is to ask Phoenix, Arizona cosmetic dentists, Dr. LeSueur and Dr. Dodaro about your options. Crossbite can be repaired many ways. One of the newest and more popular ways is using the Invisalign system.

Invisalign is a series of clear, removable aligners that dentists use as an alternative to traditional metal braces. This series of aligners slowly move the teeth into the proper place. Unlike metal braces they are not cemented to your teeth so you can remove them for eating and brushing your teeth. Since they are clear, most people never know you have braces!

If you have any questions regarding Crossbite and Invisalign please do not hesitate to contact Phoenix, Arizona cosmetic dentists, Dr. LeSueur and Dr. Dodaro for a consultation at (480)834-6991. In the past when people discussed braces, visions of the dreaded metal mouth appeared – just like Ugly Betty on TV. No longer! With Invisalign, adults no longer have to be self-conscious about the fact that "at their age" they are being treated with orthodontics and many children can avoid the discomfort and aggravation of metal braces.

Invisalign braces were invented by Zia Chishti. They are transparent, removable, and moldable braces generated using 3-D computer technology. Instead of one pair of braces that are cemented to the teeth and constantly adjusted, a series of orthodontic aligners are worn in succession over a period of time. The results are straight beautiful teeth without the headaches of traditional "braces."

Invisalign is a great alternative to traditional orthodontics but just like the traditional approach, it takes time. Invisalign can also be faster in achieving your goal than other orthodontic alternatives, and most patients love the fact that they can remove their Invisalign to eat and brush their teeth. They especially love the appearance of Invisalign – most people will never notice you are wearing it. Like all orthodontics wearing some kind of retainer upon completion of Invisalign is necessary to maintain the end result.

If you have any questions regarding Invisalign, please do not hesitate to contact Phoenix, Arizona cosmetic dentists, Dr. LeSueur and Dr. Dodaro for a consultation at (480)834-6991. Once their teeth start to come in, brush them gently with an infant toothbrush. An infant toothbrush is very soft and gentle to a baby's teeth and gums, but will help acclimate the child to the feel of having his teeth brushed.

As your child gets older, you can gradually teach her to brush her own teeth. It takes a certain amount of coordination to effectively brush your teeth on your own, so it might be a few years before you can depend on your child to fly solo. In the meantime, be sure to demonstrate proper technique, and have Dr. LeSueur and Dr. Dodaro help you by also demonstrating during regular appointments.

Flossing, too, is very important for children to learn to do properly. Many children like the plastic floss holders shaped like colorful animals, as these are easier for small hands to maneuver than a piece of floss. Ask Dr. LeSueur and Dr. Dodaro to recommend a product that will work well for your child.

Dr. LeSueur and Dr. Dodaro provide pediatric dentistry in the Mesa, Arizona area, as well as Scottsdale and Phoenix, Arizona. For questions about when your child should see the dentist, or how to teach your child proper dental hygiene, please contact the offices of Dr. LeSueur and Dr. Dodaro for a consultation or an appointment.

Orthodontics

Orthodontics has become a rite of passage for children in this country. In fact, some kids are terribly disappointed when they discover that they won’t need braces. While braces for kids are commonplace, more and more of their parents are also seeking straighter teeth. In 2008, over 1 million adults were in braces, up 24% from 1996. Is it merely vanity driving these numbers or are braces really necessary for kids and adults?

While straight teeth make for a nice appearance, the advantages of orthodontic treatment go well beyond the surface. Straightening teeth early in life may help to prevent dental problems and TMJ/TMD issues later in life. Timely intervention can also prevent the loss of teeth that used to be so widely accepted as a part of orthodontic treatment many years ago.

Even if you had braces when young or if you never needed them – chances are you may as an adult. Teeth, particularly the bottom teeth, keep moving throughout our lives. When teeth move and overlap each other cleaning becomes very difficult leading to periodontal disease and decay. While our grandparents expected to end their lives with dentures because of these problems, patients today want alternatives. They want to improve their appearance as well as their dental health.

Fortunately, there are many ways to improve your appearance by straightening your teeth without living with "tinsel teeth." While traditional metal braces are common, more and more patients are opting for Invisalign. This is a system of clear trays that fit over your teeth and are worn for a prescribed amount of time. They are removable for eating and cleaning your teeth. The Invisalign system is barely noticeable when worn and moves your teeth gradually, giving you a straight, beautiful smile.

For patients who are seeking instant gratification, Phoenix, Arizona cosmetic dentists, Dr. LeSueur and Dr. Dodaro offer porcelain veneers, often referred to as “instant orthodontics. Your teeth will not be truly straightened, but they will look straight.

If you have crooked teeth, call 1-800-509-8357 for a consultation to speak to Dr. LeSueur and Dr. Dodaro about your options for a straight, beautiful smile.

Dr. LeSueur and Dr. Dodaro, serving Mesa, Phoenix, Scottsdale, Tempe and other East Valley Cities in Arizona are PREFERED Invisalign Providers (which requires a higher standard of continued education and patients treated to maintain this level of certification). However, it's important to know just what your policy will cover and what it won’t.

Dental insurance typically classifies various procedures as "mandatory" and "elective." Mandatory procedures are those that need to be done to maintain your dental health. Preventive dental care, like twice-yearly cleanings, yearly fluoride treatments, and periodic X-rays, are often covered by a dental plan. Fillings, crowns, and other treatments for cavities are usually at least partially covered.

Procedures considered to be elective, however, often are not covered, or are covered at a substantially lower rate than mandatory procedures. Much cosmetic dentistry worked is considered to be elective, so if you're considering cosmetic dentistry, be sure to consult with your insurance company to find out how much, if any, of the cost will be covered.

Procedures often considered to be elective include:

Tooth whitening

Porcelain veneers

Gum contouring

Porcelain crowns or composite fillings

Because every insurance policy is different, be sure to ask about your coverage before undergoing a cosmetic procedure.

For more information about cosmetic dentistry procedures and dental care financing options, please contact Phoenix, Mesa, and Scottsdale, Arizona area cosmetic dentists Scott LeSueur, DDS and Charles Dodaro, DDS.

TMD and Headaches

Severe recurring headaches can be one of the most difficult conditions to diagnose. Unfortunately, they can also be debilitating.

One cause of persistent headaches can be temporomandibular joint disorder, or TMD. The temporomandibular joint is the joint where the lower jaw meets the upper jaw. If this joint becomes misaligned, it can cause a variety of symptoms, including:

Jaw pain

Neck and shoulder pain

Persistent headaches

Clicking in the jaw joint

Pain in the ears

These and similar symptoms can be caused by a variety of other conditions, some of which can be serious. It's important to rule out these other conditions, but if your doctor has been unable to find a root cause, it might be time to see a neuromuscular dentist.

Dr. LeSueur and Dr. Dodaro are experienced with neuromuscular dentistry, and can successfully diagnose and treat your TMD. If you suffer from recurring headaches and have been unable to find a cause, they can determine if your symptoms are due to TMD, and treat you accordingly.

By completely relaxing your jaw muscles, Dr. LeSueur and Dr. Dodaro can determine the proper alignment of your jaw and recommend treatment to properly align the joint. A diagnosis of TMD might be your first step on the road to a pain-free life.

If you suffer from recurring headaches and believe they might be caused by TMD, please contact Dr. LeSueur and Dr. Dodaro at their Mesa, Arizona cosmetic dentistry offices. Serving Mesa, Phoenix, and Scottsdale Arizona, Dr. LeSueur and Dr. Dodaro would be happy to schedule an initial consultation.

The Importance of Brushing and Flossing Each Day

Regular dentist appointments are vital to maintaining optimal dental health, but nothing can take the place of everyday dental care. In fact, the most powerful tools in the arsenal to prevent tooth decay and gum disease are your own toothbrush and dental floss.

Regular brushing removes bits of food that remain on your teeth when you eat. These bits of food collect bacteria, which develop into plaque. The bacteria produce acid that eats through the surface of the teeth, creating cavities. Daily brushing greatly reduces the growth of plaque, thus reducing the development of cavities.

In addition, brushing your teeth stimulates your gums, helping to prevent gum disease. Flossing also stimulates the gums, as well as removing bits of food and plaque that your toothbrush can't quite reach.

It's important not only to brush and floss every day, but to use the correct technique. If you're unsure about how to properly brush and floss, Dr. LeSueur and Dr. Dodaro would be happy to demonstrate proper technique. They can also help ensure you're using the right kind of toothbrush. If you use a toothbrush that's too soft, it won't keep your teeth clean enough. But if your toothbrush is too stiff, it can actually damage your tooth enamel.

In the Mesa, Phoenix, and Scottsdale, Arizona area, Dr. Scott LeSueur and Dr. Charles Dodaro provide general, cosmetic, and neuromuscular dentistry. Neuromuscular dentistry looks at all the aspects of the teeth, jaw, nerves, and muscles and how they relate to each other. By contrast, general dentistry addresses the health of the teeth and gums alone, while cosmetic dentistry focuses on the appearance of the teeth.

A major focus of neuromuscular dentistry is temporomandibular joint disorder, or TMD. TMD involves a misalignment of the temporomandibular joint, the joint where the lower jaw attaches to the upper jaw. TMD has been notoriously difficult to diagnose and to treat, but technological developments in both diagnosis and treatment have brought relief to many TMD sufferers.

Dr. LeSueur and Dr. Dodaro, both trained neuromuscular dentists, will relax your jaw completely to determine how it should be properly aligned. Then they’ll recommend a course of treatment for TMD that can incorporate elements of general and cosmetic dentistry. Depending on how your bite needs to be realigned, you might need veneers, crowns, orthotic appliances, or even traditional orthodontic treatment.

Because Dr. LeSueur and Dr. Dodaro are trained in general, cosmetic, and neuromuscular dentistry, they can give you a comprehensive diagnosis and treatment plan for TMD. For more information about neuromuscular dentistry in the Mesa, Scottsdale and Phoenix, Arizona area, please contact Dr. LeSueur and Dr. Dodaro for an initial consultation.

Porcelain Veneers vs. Teeth Whitening

If you have stained or discolored teeth, teeth whitening can give you back your bright, white smile. Powerful teeth whitening procedures are performed in the dentist’s office, lightening your stained teeth by as many as six or seven shades in a single treatment.

Dr. LeSueur and Dr. Dodaro offer BioLase Laser Bleaching for in-office tooth whitening. In this procedure, your gums are painted with a protective gel while your teeth are painted with a whitening agent. Dr. LeSueur and Dr. Dodaro then use a laser light to activate the whitening agent, providing rapid, painless, dramatic whitening. The also offer Zoom! tooth whitening, which is a perfect procedure to use in combination with another procedure.

If you would prefer an at-home treatment, Dr. LeSueur and Dr. Dodaro offer the UltraDent take-home kit. The UltraDent kit consists of specially made trays. The whitening agent is placed in the trays, and you can wear them either overnight or for an hour each day.

If the staining on your teeth won’t respond to tooth whitening treatments, Dr. LeSueur and Dr. Dodaro might recommend porcelain veneers. Porcelain veneers are specially color-matched to your natural teeth. Wafer-thin, partially translucent shells of porcelain, veneers are affixed to your teeth and can cover any major discoloration that can’t be corrected with tooth whitening.

For an initial consultation to determine how to treat your stained teeth, please contact Dr. Scott LeSueur and Dr. Charles Dodaro. Providing teeth whitening and other cosmetic dentistry procedures in the Mesa, Scottsdale, and Phoenix, Arizona area, we’ll be happy to answer your questions and help you achieve a white, beautiful smile.

Causes of Stained Teeth

While we all wish to have bright, white teeth, many factors can cause discoloration or staining. Many of these factors can be eliminated or prevented, and most can be treated with tooth whitening procedures.

The most common, and most treatable, causes of stained tooth enamel are dietary. Various foods and beverages can stain the teeth, including coffee, tea, and other strongly-colored foods. Tobacco also causes stains. Because these substances stain the outside surface of the teeth, this is referred to as extrinsic staining. Extrinsic staining can be eliminated with tooth whitening treatments.

Intrinsic staining discolors the deeper layers of the tooth, and is often resistant to tooth whitening treatment. Intrinsic staining can be caused by:

Trauma

Excessive fluoride intake

Some antibiotics

Tetracycline

Hereditary factors

Fluoride, antibiotics and tetracycline staining occurs during the formation of the permanent teeth and becomes part of the structure of the tooth. This kind of discoloration can be corrected with porcelain veneers if tooth whitening isn't effective.

Dr. LeSueur and Dr. Dodaro offer powerful tooth whitening procedures in their Mesa, Arizona offices. The BioLase Laser Bleaching technique uses a powerful light to remove stains from the surface of the teeth and is performed right in the office. Alternately, the UltraDent system provides a take-home kit for tooth whitening in the comfort of your home. They also offer Zoom! tooth whitening.

If your discoloration does not respond to these treatments, Dr. LeSueur and Dr. Dodaro also offer porcelain veneers to restore your white, beautiful smile.

For more information about tooth whitening in Mesa, Scottsdale and Phoenix, Arizona, please contact Dr. Scott LeSueur and Dr. Charles Dodaro at their Mesa, Arizona offices. On the first visit, your teeth are prepared for the restoration and the dentist takes a mold. A temporary restoration is then placed, and the mold goes to a lab where your final, custom-made restoration is crafted. When it returns from the lab, it's permanently affixed during a second visit.

CEREC Procedure

With CEREC, much less tooth needs to be removed and everything happens in a single visit. Rather than using the usual gel-like substance to take a mold of your teeth, a special powder is applied to the teeth, and Dr. LeSueur or Dr. Dodaro takes detailed digital pictures. These pictures are converted into a 3D computer model. This CEREC computer then directs a computer milling machine to mill the restoration from a block of porcelain, which Dr. LeSueur or Dr. Dodaro can then place immediately on your teeth.

The small ceramic blocks used by CEREC technology are color-matched and formulated to mimic your natural enamel so your restorations look and feel very much like your natural teeth. Dr. LeSueur and Dr. Dodaro still use traditional cosmetic dentistry methods. However, CEREC offers a high-tech, convenient alternative in many instances saving patients both time and problems associated with temporary restorations.

If you're in the Phoenix, Scottsdale or Mesa, Arizona area and would like more information about CEREC technology, please contact experienced cosmetic dentists Dr. Scott LeSueur or Dr. Charles Dodaro to find out how CEREC works and how it can help you.

What Problems Do Veneers Address?

Perhaps one of the most versatile tools available in cosmetic dentistry is porcelain veneers. Relatively simple to apply, veneers can make a dramatic difference in your smile without having to use long-term orthodontics or drastic restructuring of the teeth, as for crowns.

Dr. LeSueur and Dr. Dodaro use veneers to address a number of issues, including:

Severe discoloration

Cracks

Chips

Gaps between teeth

Misalignment

Porcelain veneers are custom-made to match the natural color of your teeth, and carefully shaped to correct the issues you've chosen to have addressed. Dr. LeSueur and Dr. Dodaro remove a very thin layer of enamel from the front of your teeth to accommodate the veneers, then make a mold from which the veneers are constructed. After the custom-made veneers are completed, they're attached to your teeth with a special bonding agent.

Veneers cover minor chips and cracks in the teeth, making your smile even again. If your teeth are severely discolored and don't respond to whitening treatments, veneers can also give you a bright, white smile.

Because porcelain veneers are so versatile, they can be used to accomplish "instant orthodontics." In instant orthodontics, veneers are carefully constructed to disguise misalignment or gaps between the teeth, giving you a perfect smile without the expense and long-term discomfort of traditional orthodontics.

If you'd like to find out what porcelain veneers can do for you, please contact Dr. LeSueur and Dr. Dodaro at their cosmetic dentistry offices serving Phoenix, Mesa, and Scottsdale, Arizona. This is a wonderful option for those with loose or ill-fitting dentures or partial dentures and can even be used to replace individual teeth in many cases where larger conventional implants won't work. There are now several brands of mini implants approved by the FDA for permanent implant use varying in size, shape, and length allowing more versatility in placement. These mini implants can usually be placed and used immediately rather then requiring the several month waiting period of most larger conventional implants. They can also last just as long as the larger implants, which is potentially for life. They are very simple to place with local anesthetic and our patients report no pain at the time of placement and little or no pain afterward. We have quite a number of patients that reported a "life changing" improvement to their ability to eat and enjoy food again once we placed their mini implants.

We would enjoy having the opportunity to show anyone that is interested in mini implant placement what it could do for them and answer any questions. Please feel free to contact our office.

What are Porcelain Veneers?

An increasingly popular choice that deals with various cosmetic dentistry issues is porcelain veneers. They can be used for a variety of purposes, many of which could previously only be dealt with by using much more invasive procedures.

Porcelain veneers are easily applied, and require minimal alteration of the tooth. Many times only a small amount of surface enamel is removed.

While porcelain veneers are extremely thin - about as thick as your fingernail - when they are bonded to your teeth they become very strong. In addition, the porcelain has a translucent quality that makes it look more like the natural enamel of your teeth. Traditional porcelain crowns and other cosmetic alternatives are generally opaque, making them look artificial. Porcelain veneers are carefully color-matched and custom-made to fit your mouth and give you exactly the look you want.

Because of their strength, ease of application, and natural looks, porcelain veneers are used to help correct discolored, cracked, chipped, or slightly uneven teeth. They can even correct minor gaps between teeth, giving you a beautiful, perfect smile.

For more information on what porcelain veneers can do for you, please contact Dr. LeSueur and Dr. Dodaro to schedule an initial porcelain veneers consultation. Our Mesa, Arizona offices serve Mesa, Phoenix, Scottsdale, Tempe and other East Valley Cities. However there are many significant health benefits to straightening teeth. Some major benefits include:

1. Major improvements in periodontal (gum) health which can reduce loss of interdental papilla (the tissue between teeth). reduce periodontal pockets (the space between teeth and gums) and minimize recession (the lowering of gums).
2. Significant reduction in tooth wear resulting in less chipping and breakage and allowing many more years of healthy use.

3. Correction and prevention of tooth tipping, overlaping, and shifting which contributes to
potential jaw (TMJ) problems.

We would like the show you how Invisalign can improve you smile and create a healthier mouth. It rained during the entire ceremony. We were all soaked because it was outside!!! However, the speakers shorten their speaches making it more enjoyable for all. My wife and I spent a good part of the night chaporoning the graduation party at a water park.

I got lot's of pictures of my daughters gorgeous smile. As her father, I bleached her teeth in our dental office and she touches them up regulary. It made me realize what a difference bleaching makes in improving lives. We can't emphasize enough the impact dental health can have on your current state of health. Dental health also can serve as indicator of additional health problems that might otherwise go undetected.

Areas impacted by dental health include the following:

Proper Nutrition - Missing teeth and dental pain can cause difficult and painful chewing, and thus do not encourage consumption of healthy foods.

Heart Health - A high degree of plaque build up and gum disease are linked to many heart-related problems, including:

Clogged arteries

Heart disease

Bacterial infections of the heart (endocarditis)

Diabetes - Diabetics have more trouble controlling blood sugar and insulin levels if they have poor dental health. Diabetics are also at greater risk for dry mouth, cavities and gum disease.

Infections in the Body - Infection of the teeth and gums can spread to other parts of the body, causing serious complications.

Pregnancy - Gum disease is connected to low birth weight and early births. Bacteria in the bloodstream from gum infection can travel into your baby's bloodstream.

If you are in the Phoenix, Mesa or Scottsdale, Arizona region and would like to make dental health a priority in your life, please call 480-834-6991 to schedule an appointment with Dr. Lesueur or Dr. Dodaro today.

Why Should I fix a Tooth That Doesn’t Hurt?

Through routine dental visits, my patients allow me to detect signs of tooth problems early. In this way, I save them time and money that would have been spent on complicated procedures had they not been proactive.

Silent Dental Problems

Many dental problems often provide no initial pain signals, including:

Cracked teeth

Chipped teeth

Cavities

Loose crowns or fillings

While the patient remains oblivious to one or more of these conditions, the area is rapidly decaying as bacteria build up.

Potential for Widespread Infection

If patients wait until a nerve is impacted and they're feeling pain, they've generally waited too long. Nerves are the pulp at the tooth's center. Here, the blood vessels and nerves from the rest of the body enter the tooth. If decay reaches the pulp, infection can spread to other parts of the body. If infection reaches the chamber running down the root of the tooth, or the root canal, the patient's only two options are a root canal procedure or tooth extraction.

If you are interested in getting a top-notch professional cleaning that can save time and money, please contact the offices of Drs. Gum disease is preventable with good dental hygiene, but once you get it, it’s difficult to stop. Tooth and bone loss can result from untreated gum disease, and unsightly swollen, red gums are also its hallmark.
Steps to avoiding gum disease include the following:
• Brush regularly
It goes without saying that regular tooth brushing is essential. But do you brush long enough? Two minutes of gentle brushing with a soft brush is the minimum. Don’t brush too firmly—this can damage your gums and even cause bleeding.
• Floss consistently
You just can’t skip flossing since your brush can’t access those hard-to-reach places. You’ll be a prime candidate for gum disease if you skip this critical step.
• Use dye tablets
Give dye tablets a try to monitor how well you’re brushing; the stains they leave will help you locate the areas you’re missing when you brush.
• Drink lots of water
Dry mouths are a haven for bacteria growth. Hydrate frequently to reduce plaque accumulation.
• Eat healthfully
A balanced diet helps preserve your teeth and gums. Include lots of folic acid, Vitamin C, and zinc to arm your immune system to fend off tooth decay.
• Get regular professional cleanings
While good, at-home dental hygiene is an important key to dental health, don’t neglect routine professional cleanings. Only your dentist can access difficult-to-reach places and give your teeth the periodic thorough cleaning they require.

If you are interested in getting a top-notch professional cleaning, please contact the offices of Drs. Lesueur and Dodaro today at 480-834-6991 to schedule an appointment.

Invisalign Questions

In our practice, we’ve found that many people aren’t aware that there’s an alternative to the old metal braces of yesteryear. The Invisalign option makes braces a much more viable option for adults or anyone seeking a more attractive smile.

1.Just what is Invisalign?
Invisalign is a series of clear trays. These trays are custom made to gradually move your teeth into position. Nearly invisible, the trays can be taken out for special occasions and for eating and tooth brushing but must be worn for at least 22 hours a day.

2. How does the Invisalign process work?
The patient wears each aligner, or pair of trays, for two weeks. I custom-design each tray to move your teeth into alignment slowly, over time. With targeted precision and exactly the right amount of pressure, I can carefully manipulate your teeth’s positioning.

3. How long must I wear Invisalign?
Depending on the degree of adjustment you require, times vary. I’ve seen patients who complete the process in six months, while others make take up to two years.

4. Is there a way to achieve straight teeth faster?
Porcelain veneers are an option for those wanting an almost instantaneous change. Veneers don’t actually straighten your existing teeth, but they will definitely give you a great smile.

5. Why should I bother with the tooth-straightening process?
Straight teeth are a tremendous confidence booster. My patients report that their self-esteem climbs dramatically. Also, since crooked teeth are more difficult to clean, they decay more easily. Chewing is harder work with crooked teeth, and this can ultimately lead to a painful condition called TMD (temporomandibular joint disorder).

If you or a loved one is interested in beautifying your smile with Invisalign, please contact the office of Dr. Lesueur today at 480-834-6991 to schedule an appointment.

The Mercury Controversy

Do you still have metal fillings, or are you considering have a cavity filled with metal? You might want to pay attention to a debate in the dental community and beyond known as the Mercury Controversy. Our patients are sometimes unaware of the hazard these fillings could present. Many patients with metal fillings complain that a variety of health problems plague them—and attribute their health concerns to the mercury found in their metal fillings.

Health complaints include:

Chronic illnesses

Autoimmune disorders

Degenerative brain and nervous system diseases

Birth defects

Mouth lesions

Mental disorders

Support for claims that mercury can impact overall health comes from a variety of sources, including:

The World Health Organization (WHO) notes that mercury exposure can increase during tooth grinding, brushing teeth or chewing gum, and quotes a report stating that these activities cause a 5.3 fold increase in mercury.

A Swedish autopsy-based study measured mercury levels in brains and kidneys and found that more metal fillings meant a greater mercury content.

A German study found that mercury urinary excretion was significantly higher in those with mercury amalgam fillings.

Research on monkeys demonstrated that mercury from dental restorations builds up in the brain, kidney, lung and liver.

If you or a loved one is interested in replacing your metal fillings or you need to have a new filling put in, please set an appointment with the dental team of Dr. Lesueur and Dr. Dodaro today at 480-834-6991. We use only porcelain/composite white fillings to avoid any risk of health complications.

Dental Lasers and What They Can Do

Only a small percentage of dental offices employ lasers, yet lasers decrease pain, improve safety and accelerate the healing process. We frequently use lasers in our practice to enhance our patient’s comfort level and results.

What are Lasers?
Unlike most forms of light, lasers are precision high-energy, man-made beams. Because they are so precise and targeted, they impact less tissue during a procedure.

What Does this Mean for the Dental Patient?
Several procedures benefit from laser use:

Recontouring Gums - Laser gum recontouring causes less damage to gums, and actually seals gum tissue during the laser process. Bleeding and the chance of infection are significantly reduced.

Gum treatment - Removal of plaque and bacteria from gums is much easier with lasers as they can easily target the spaces in and around teeth without trauma to the surrounding area.

Cavities - Lasers eliminate areas of decay before fillings and crowns are placed or prior to performing other restoration procedures. Because lasers are so targeted, more of the healthy tooth area can be maintained.

Shaping of Crooked Teeth - Hard tissue lasers can actually reshape tooth enamel and make teeth straighter, enhancing appearance.

Whitening Teeth - Lasers are used in combination with whitening gel to speed up the whitening process, sometimes confining this process to just one visit.

If you are in the Phoenix, Mesa or Scottsdale, Arizona region and would like to learn more about laser use in dentistry, please call 480-834-6991 to schedule an appointment with Dr. Lesueur or Dr. Dodaro today.

What is Dental Bonding?

Dental bonding is a simple and highly effective solution for many of our patients.
A dental bond is a pliable material that can be shaped and fitted to correct dental problems. The material is matched to the patient’s exact tooth color to create a completely natural-looking appearance.

Dental bonds are used to correct the following dental woes:

Chipped Teeth – Chipped teeth appear crooked. They promote decay and discoloration. The bonding process can repair up to one-half of a chipped tooth.

Cracked Teeth -- Cracks also promote tooth decay; however, with early detection, bonding can seal a crack and ward off more damage or prevent it altogether.

Decayed Areas -- Small decayed areas can be taken out and filled with bonding material, halting further decay and sealing the tooth.

Crooked teeth – A porcelain bond can be applied to slightly crooked teeth to make them more straight.

Small gaps – Bonding material can be applied to either side of the tooth to fill up the gap. Not only will your smile improve, but less food will end up trapped in your teeth.

Discolored Teeth – Bonding can be used to cover areas of tooth discoloration.

If you are in the Phoenix, Mesa or Scottsdale, Arizona region and would like to explore bonding procedures further, please call 480-834-6991 to schedule an appointment with Dr. Lesueur or Dr. Dodaro today.

The Difference Between Metal and Porcelain Fillings

Metal fillings were the order of the day in years past. Thankfully, today's porcelain/composite fillings not only give my patients a more attractive appearance, but also contribute to overall dental health. Our practice employs only porcelain/composite fillings for their superior health and cosmetic benefits. White porcelain or composite fillings easily fill small pockets or decayed areas, protecting your tooth from further damage.

Key Drawbacks of Metal Fillings
Older metal or silver amalgam fillings contain mercury. This substance causes tooth expansion and contraction, especially when you consume hot or cold drinks or food. The expansion and contraction process weakens the tooth, causing cracks. Cracks allow food particles to find their way into the tooth, promoting further decay.

Comfort and Durability of Composite Fillings
Since composite fillings don't serve to conduct hot and cold sensations, no pain is associated with them. And the lack of expansion and contraction protect the tooth from cracking and inviting more decay.

The Attractiveness Factor
We can't downplay the fact that porcelain/composite fillings can make your smile considerably more attractive - even when you laugh heartily. You can be confident and relaxed knowing that your fillings won’t be visible since they'll match the rest of your teeth.

If you are in the Phoenix, Mesa or Scottsdale, Arizona region and would like to replace metal fillings with porcelain/or composite varieties, or if you need a new filling, please call 480-834-6991 to schedule an appointment with Dr. Lesueur or Dr. Dodaro today.

Welcome to Cosmetic Dentists Dr. LeSueur & Dr. Dodaro Blog

Serving Phoenix, Mesa and Scottsdale, Arizona

Healthy teeth and a beautiful smile mean a healthier, happier you!
